NID [Design Aptitude Test (DAT)] 2019 Notification Released

National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad and at its Bengaluru and Gandhinagar campuses is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act (18 of 2014), the institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees-Masters of Design (M. Des.) of two-and-a-half-year duration and Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) of four year duration. (The Institute is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)).

Eligibility Criteria:

Age Limit:

⇒ For Indian Nationals in General Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1999 are eligible to apply for admission.

⇒ For Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (Other Backward Class – Non – Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST): Upper age limit for candidates is 23 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1996 are eligible to apply for admission.

⇒ For Indian Nationals in PwD Reserved Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 25 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1994 are eligible to apply for admission.

⇒ For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1999 are eligible to apply for admission.

Educational Qualification:

Applications for academic year 2019–20 are open to applicants who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2018 – 19 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent

Overseas Category (Supernumerary) Candidates:

Of the seats available for the B. Des. programme, 15% supernumerary seats have been created for overseas applicants. The actual number of seats available under Overseas (supernumerary) category are as follows:

Important Note:

Candidates must have passed their Class XII examination (higher secondary (10+2)) or equivalent at the in person counseling scheduled in June 2019.

Any candidate who has not passed their final board exam or equivalent before the in person counseling will not be eligible for admission.

Note: The dates above apply to the B. Des and GDPD programmes unless mentioned otherwise.

*The exact dates of DAT (Mains) will be as mentioned in the Admit Card. Admit Cards will be available for download on the NID website (www.admissions.nid.edu) as per the schedule. It is the responsibility of all candidates to download and print their own Admit Cards.

Stages of Design Aptitude Tests (DAT):

The Design Aptitude Tests will be conducted in two stages:

Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims

Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains

About DAT Prelims:

The B. Des DAT prelims paper is 3 hours test of 100 marks which evaluates the Design aptitude of the candidate. It comprises of a mix of objective and subjective questions.

The question paper is in English.

Based on the DAT Prelims scores, separate merit lists shall be prepared for each category (OPEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD). Only shortlisted candidates will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam as per the schedule announced.

Separate merit list will be prepared for Overseas candidates.

About DAT Mains for B. Des/GDPD:

Based on the scores obtained in the DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the DAT Mains. The Admit Card for shortlisted candidates will be available for download only on the official NID admissions website (http://admissions.nid.edu).

The DAT mains will consist of tests in multiple formats such in a studio set up. The tests will be conducted over two days.

The total marks of the test will be out of 100.

The tests will be conducted in English only.

Weightages of DAT Prelims & DAT Mains for final result:

Note: Only candidates who have appeared for all the tests in both the stages will be considered eligible for the Merit List.

Announcement of Results:

In order to be considered for the merit list, a candidate must have appeared for all the tests in both the DAT Prelims and the DAT Mains.
